A gift for the host or hostess is a nice way of thanking them for the invitation and doesn't have to be expensive. A gift is certainly not anticipated, but appreciated. You should definitely bring a hostess gift:
If you are the guest of honor {if someone is hosting a shower or celebration on your behalf}
If you have not been asked to contribute to the occasion by bringing food or beverages

those glass pedestals are great I'd love it if you would add this to my blog party at http://raegunwear.blogspot.com
these are all really lovely ideas. A couple of my favourites include:
my homemade cheese crackers stacked inside a chinese food container (from Michaels) - the recipe card included serves as the gift tag (on reverse);
an orchid plant in a pretty pot, tied with satin ribbon, and accompanied by a glass mister (when they are available locally) - not homemade but it's always appreciated and they last so long;
I also have given a rosemary plant in a similar manner and always include one of my favourite homemade rosemary cracker recipes or my rosemary lemon loaf to go along with it.
Diane, thanks for sharing! I love the cheese cracker idea! Yum!
